Blog Tour: This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales

Last year I had my mind completely blown away by THIS SONG WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE by Leila Sales. I raved about it, I flailed about it. This book is everything a book should be and then some.

I am so excited to bring Leila back to the blog to celebrate the release of THIS SONG WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE in paperback!

“So Here We Are,” by Bloc Party

I spent my junior year in college studying abroad in Bristol, England, where I had cultural experiences and went to class but mostly focused on going out dancing five nights a week. My friends and I would go to PoNaNa on Tuesdays, Propaganda on Wednesday, Stutter on Thursdays, Ramshackle on Fridays, and Klub Kute on Saturdays. We would take off Sunday and Monday. I don’t really know what we did on Sunday and Monday nights. Homework, maybe?

Then Tuesday we would start it all over from the top.

When you go out that often, you start to hear the same songs again and again. This was 2005, so I danced to Franz Ferdinand’s “Take Me Out” and the Killers’ “Somebody Told Me” HUNDREDS of times. If you’ve read my novel THIS SONG WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE, you might remember the bit where Char explains how sick he is of Blur’s “Girls and Boys.” That is probably the most autobiographical passage in the book. It is a great song that I’ve heard about twelve times as often as I wanted to.

But I’ll always remember this one night when I did hear a new song. It was a Saturday at Klub Kute, a club that looked a lot like how I imagine Start in THIS SONG WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE. It was late and the lights kept changing colors and the DJ played this hauntingly beautiful song. After it was over, I asked him what it was called, and he wrote down “So Here We Are,” by Bloc Party, so I wouldn’t forget.

I don’t know how I would have experienced this song if the first time I ever heard it had been, like, in a grocery store choosing amongst toilet paper options. All I know is how it sounded at two in the morning in the middle of a dance floor in a foreign country, and that is how it’s always continued to sound to me: perfect.

  4. A song that saved my life... hmm. I don't really think any have (and I actually thought about this all day before commenting haha), but there are a ton of songs that have influenced my life, and made me WANT to change. Maybe some day, I will, and then I can say that those songs helped. One song that did have an impact was "Going the Distance" by Cake, which I SWEAR made me swim faster every time I heard it in my head while swimming ;)
